A creative prototype that translates scary immigration officer language into politeness, and calms down nervous international students coming back into the country.

Immigration isn’t just paperwork. It’s power.
And for international students, it can be terrifying.

Re-entering the U.S. as an international student can mean tense, fast-paced interactions with immigration officers. Language breaks down. Anxiety spikes.

How might we reframe fear into clarity—without changing the rules, just the tone?

Scrapping together a pipeline...

We prototyped a system with what we could access:

Experimenting with prompts and designs

Prompt engineering had to be very specific in order to get what we wanted.

Using techniques such as role-based, few-shot and chain-of-thought prompts, we were able to get what we wanted...

Moving Forward

While our prototype focused on softening written language, we saw real potential in expanding to voice interactions — preserving tone, not just text.

At its core, our work explored how AI can augment human communication, not replace it: supporting empathy while respecting the pressures of systems like immigration checkpoints.

There’s still open questions around language, tone, and cultural nuance — but this was a first step toward making intimidating spaces feel a little more human.
